At The International Surface Event (TISE), one of the floor covering industry's largest trade shows for professionals, carpet and rug manufacturers unveil new introductions and the hottest styles for the upcoming year. Having just returned from the event held annually in Las Vegas in January, I noticed certain key trends in carpet and area rugs for 2015.
Soft fibers continue to dominate the show floor. For the last several years, manufacturers have been dedicating themselves to creating a softer-feeling fiber that can still stand up to heavy traffic. Collections such as Mohawk SmartStrand and SmartStrand Silk, various styles featuring StainMaster Tactesse fiber, and Beaulieu Indulgence were featured prominently at TISE 2015.
We can expect that this trend will continue because, really, who wants to go back to ordinary carpet fibers after feeling the new soft fibers? (If you're not sure how to answer this question, do yourself a favor and head to your nearest retailer to see – or feel – for yourself.)
Also continuing from previous years was the showcasing of carpets and rugs with lots of texture. Cut and loop styles continued to occupy a big portion of the broadloom displays, featuring geometric as well as more randomized patterns. Textured saxonies are ever-popular, and the trend for this year has been leaning towards fuller, more luxurious looking and feeling carpets.
In area rugs, natural hide rugs in contemporary styles proved to be a big hit.
Couristan displayed one such rug from its Chalet Collection, featuring a beautiful plank styling in a natural cowhide leather, and thereby blending modern styles with classic materials.
The textured trend isn't just about the feel of the rug, however; it's about the appearance of texture also.
An emerging trend, according to Victoria Redshaw, the Futurist at Scarlet Opus, is a "crackled" or worn-out appearance on the rug. The look involves the appearance of an older, heirloom rug that has been so cherished, the pattern has partially worn away, explained Redshaw, who talked at TISE about what we can expect to see in design trends in the next couple of years. The result is a beautiful rug reminiscent of heritage collections, with a good deal of visual texture.
Gray continues to be the hottest neutral in carpeting and rugs. Gray in all tones – from warm, earthy grays to cool, steely ones – was the predominant color seen from booth to booth.
Color offerings in new collections also included the ever-present taupes, as well as an increased number of pastel colors.
Metallic accents in carpet (spilling over from the style seen currently in tiles) are a big trend that will continue to grow in 2015 and into 2016, according to Redshaw. Evidence of the trend was noticeable in both area rugs and wall-to-wall carpets, with the use of high-luster threads in gold, silver, bronze or pearlescent tones, subtly woven into the rug fibers, such as the new "Crystal Stitch" by Milliken.
Just about every fiber type was represented at TISE, but the big three stand-outs this year were wool (within the large Wools of New Zealand pavilion), solution dyed nylon, and Mohawk's triexta (which unveiled its newest soil-resisting technology in the SmartStrand collection: Forever Clean).
